Health care

As health care needs in the Cape Fear region continue to grow, so have facilities.

In 2008, Cape Fear Valley Health System unveiled Valley Pavilion, the newest wing of Cape Fear Valley Medical Center on Owen Drive.

Valley Pavilion includes 132 new inpatient and observation beds, a new emergency department, a state-of-the-art Heart & Vascular Center, a Women's Pavilion and a new imaging department for radiology services.

Located on the south side of the medical center, the $150 million expansion brings the health system's total number of licensed beds to 765, making it the ninth largest health care system in the state.

Each inpatient room in Valley Pavilion is outfitted with a flat-screen TV and new bathrooms.

The new emergency department includes separate entrances for ambulances, private physician workrooms, family consulting spaces and a secure area for psychiatric patients.

Ambulances and patients driving to the emergency department now enter from Village Drive, as opposed to the old Medical Drive entrance.

Each room will have computers so doctors and nurses can automatically access medical records and patient histories. Doctors can pull up X-rays or other information to use as teaching tools for the patients.

The new design is meant to streamline care, allowing quicker access to other parts of the hospital for patients who need to be moved, health system officials said.

Other changes include a new, color-coded system for finding your way around the hospital and a hospitalwide change in phone numbers. For the wayfinding system, colors are assigned by building, and new signs will be erected to indicate building names and color zones.

If you need help getting around in the new facility, maps are located in the lobby and at other entrances.
