Scotland County
Don't let this little Southern county fool you.
It's the birthplace of noted North Carolinians such as former Gov. Terry Sanford, entertainer Ben Vereen, professional golfer Leonard Thompson, ex-Major League baseball player Wes Covington and noted chemist and biologist David Stephens.
It is named for Scotland.
The county seat is Laurinburg, home of St. Andrews Presbyterian College and Laurinburg Institute, a historically black prep school.
There are plenty of lakes and ponds within close proximity of Laurinburg, such as Ida Mill Pond, St. Andrews College Lakes, Monroe Mill Pond, McNair Pond, and Lytchs Pond and the Richmond Mill Pond in Laurel Hill. Or how about a weekend of camping at Pine Lake Campground in Marston?
If you are a golfer, test your game at Deercroft Golf & Country Club in Wagram, Cypress Creek Golf Links or Scotch Meadows Country Club.
History buffs may visit the Scottish Heritage Center on the St. Andrews Presbyterian College campus, the Scotland County Memorial Library Local History Room in downtown Laurinburg or the John Blue House, circa 1890s. Other historic structures include the Jones-Lytch Cabin, circa 1800; the Shaw Cabin, circa early 1800s; the McNeill Cabin, circa mid-1800s; the Steward-Hawley-Malloy House and Civil War Trail; and the Richmond Temperance and Literary Society Hall in Wagram.
