From rivers and creeks to farm ponds and reservoirs, there's no shortage of places to wet a hook here.

Cape Fear River: Home to the state record flathead catfish may be fished from the shoreline or accessed by ramps at Campbellton Landing, at 1122 Person St., and William O. Huske Lock & Dam No. 3, at 1248 Bill Hall Road.

Falls Lake: State recreation area offers boating, fishing, swimming, camping and hiking on 12,000 acres in Wake and Durham counties. Motorized boating access from N.C. 98 or 50. Canoe/kayak access off N.C. 50. (919) 676-1027.

Glenville Lake: Located in Mazarick Park at 1368 Belvedere Ave. Boat rentals and pier fishing. 433-1575.

Harris Lake: 680-acre park in New Hill, off U.S. 1. Boating, fishing, hiking, biking, wildlife refuge. (919) 387-4349.

Jordan Lake: Off U.S. 64 in Apex. Nearly 14,000 acres of lake. Boating, fishing, swimming, camping. (919) 362-0586.

Jones Lake: State park. 2,208 acres. Adjacent to Bladen Lakes State Forest on N.C. 242. Hiking, swimming, fishing, camping, sand volleyball. (910) 588-4550.

Lake Crabtree: Off Interstate 40 near Raleigh-Durham International Airport. 735 acres. Fishing, boating, hiking, biking. No gas-powered motors allowed on boats. Sailboats, rowboats, canoes and kayaks available for rent. (919) 460-3396.

Lake Rim: Off Raeford Road. 50 acres. Fishing, summer youth camps, tennis, sand volleyball. No gas-powered boats allowed. 424-6134.

Lake Tillery: Montgomery and Stanly counties, just east of Charlotte, accessible from N.C. 731, N.C. 73 and N.C. 24-27. About 5,000 acres. Fishing, boating. (800) 899-4435.

Lake Waccamaw: Off Secondary Road 1947 in Columbus County. Home to rare plants and endangered animals on 8,936 acres. Boating, primitive camping, fishing, hiking. Two public boat ramps near, but not inside, park. (910) 646-4748.

Rhodes Pond: U.S. 301. More than 455 acres. State-managed hunting and fishing area loaded with bald cypress trees and beaver dams.

White Lake: Off U.S. 701, near Elizabethtown. 1,065 acres. Fishing, water skiing, boating, camping, swimming, water festival held every May. (910) 862-4368.
