Largest private employers in Cumberland County

Cape Fear Valley Health System employs about 5,200 people in Cumberland County. That figure does not include most of the system's 525-plus physicians. In addition to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, the system includes Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital, Cape Fear Valley Rehabilitation Center, Behavioral Health Care and Bladen County Hospital.

Walmart employs about 3,570 people. Roughly 1,050 of them work at Walmart's distribution center in Hope Mills. The rest are at its five Cumberland County stores and one Sam's Club.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. employs about 2,920 people at a sprawling factory off Ramsey Street in north Fayetteville. The tire manufacturer opened in 1969.

Food Lion has 21 grocery stores in the county that employ more than 1,100 people.

Purolator Filters NA has about 990 employees at its plant on Natal Street. Owned by two German companies, Bosch and Mann+Hummel, the plant makes oil, air, fuel and cabin filters.

Eaton Corp. has about 640 workers at its plant on Doc Bennett Road. The company makes industrial motor controls.

M.J. Soffe employs about 575 people at its Fayetteville facility off U.S. 301. The company, which started in Fayetteville, makes and screenprints apparel ranging from military physical training uniforms to cheerleading shorts. Today it is owned by Delta Apparel Inc. of Duluth, Ga.

Lowe's has more than 500 employees at three home-improvement stores.

AT&T Mobility has about 480 people who work for the company in Cumberland County, with most of them employed at the company's call center on Owen Drive.

DuPont has about 460 employees and about 250 contractors at its plant off N.C. 87 near the Cumberland-Bladen county line. Another 43 employees and 10 contractors work at DuPont Teigin Films U.S. Limited Partnership on Cedar Creek Road.

Fayetteville Publishing Co. employs about 368 full- and part-time workers in Cumberland County. The company publishes The Fayetteville Observer, The Sandspur, Fort Bragg Life, Carolina Trader, Next! magazine, Elite magazine and other publications, including its Asheville-based Iwanna classified-advertising publications.

Maidenform Brands Inc. employs more than 300 people, plus several hundred more temporary workers at its multi-building distribution center in the Cumberland County Industrial Park. Bras, panties and the company's popular shapewear move through Fayetteville before ending up in stores across the country.

The Logistics Co., based in Fayetteville, employs hundreds of people across the globe, including many on Fort Bragg and at its new headquarters on Andrews Road. The contractor provides services to the Department of Defense, other government agencies and private companies.
