Day in the Life: Friends, community activities provide retiree fulfilling life
Eleanor Adeimy is not your typical 86-year-old.
For one thing, she's learning cheerleading.
"Well, it's not the hard kind," she said. "Just some steps and the cheers."
Adeimy, a resident of Laurinburg's retirement community, Scotia Village, loves being active.
Every morning, Adeimy likes to walk a mile, and some days she does water aerobics or line dancing.
But every day, she laughs.
"At night, there are six of us who usually eat together," she said. "The atmosphere is so friendly here, and we know everybody by their first name."
Adeimy, a former nurse, moved from Hamlet to live in an apartment at Scotia Village a little over a year ago as a way to stay independent.
"You feel more secure," she said. "It's such a friendly atmosphere. Everybody welcomes you, and the food's good."
But it's also fulfilling, said Adeimy, who enjoys visiting the people who live in the skilled nursing section of the community.
"I enjoy seeing them, and I think they enjoy seeing me," she said. "At least I hope they do."
