Day in the Life: Factory worker happy to have job close to home

Ricky McCall hasn't roamed far from his roots.

Even the four years in the Army's 82nd Airborne Division kept him close to Laurinburg.

"I love it here. This is home," said McCall, who is 47, and graduated from Scotland High School in 1980.

McCall is married to his high school sweetheart, Annie Montgomery. They've been married 25 years and have three kids, the youngest now 23 years old.

McCall said between their two families, they must have at least 50 relatives living in Scotland County.

Work has been as stable for McCall. He's been at the Campbell Soup plant in Maxton 25 years, working his way up from laborer to a supervisor.

McCall's shift is a far cry from banker's hours. His shift is from 2:30 to 11 p.m., sometimes as much as seven days a week, McCall said.

"We make a lot of chicken noodle and tomato soup," said McCall, when asked about the hot sellers.

McCall doesn't complain about the long hours. Employment can be hard to find these days.

"A few of the businesses have left," he said. "There was the Abbott plant (that made hospital supplies), but they're gone."
