Scotland County
Don't let this little Southern county fool you.
Sampson County
Sampson County was carved out of Duplin County in 1784 by the General Assembly and named for Col. John Sampson, who died the same year and was a Revolutionary War figure.
Robeson County
You may not know it, but this is the state's largest county, incorporated in 1787 and named for Col. Thomas Robeson of the Revolutionary War.
Moore County
Moore County is best known for its quaint opulence.
Lee County
This county, founded in 1907, is best known for Sanford, the county seat with a population of more than 27,000.
Hoke County
Hoke County, named for a Confederate general, was formed from parts of Cumberland and Robeson counties in 1911.
Harnett County
The county was formed in 1855 from Cumberland County. It was named for Cornelius Harnett, member of the Continental Congress and signer of the Articles of Confederation.
Columbus County
The county is named for Christopher Columbus and was founded in 1808 from parts of Bladen and Brunswick counties.
Bladen County
Settled by the Highland Scots in 1734, Bladen is one of the largest counties in the state.
